2013 Recipients of Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

Wendell Bliss, Lesa Gambill, Dylan Hunziker and Karen Reynolds won a total of $11,500 to study abroad in the spring. They are among over 1,000 outstanding American undergraduate students from almost 400 colleges and universities across the U.S. selected to receive the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to participate in a study abroad program during the spring 2013 academic term. These students are studying in Australia, Czech Republic, Malaysia and Morocco. Gilman Scholars receive up to $5,000 to apply towards their study abroad program costs, and a limited number of Critical Need Language Awards are given each year for a total award of $8,000. The list of selected Gilman Scholarship recipients, including students’ home state, university and country of study, is available at www.iie.org/gilman.

Documenting Travel: Rogers Art Gallery

The Rogers Art Gallery has a show on view till November 18: Documenting Travel: Artists and Writers in the Mediterranean World

Curated by Dr. Eileen McKiernan González, Associate Professor of Art History, this show draws on our extensive art collection to explore how travelers to countries around the Mediterranean incorporated what they saw into texts and images.



Also on Sunday, October 2, from 2-3pm there will be a Gallery Talk by Dr. Alan Mills, curator of Kentucky Made: The Art and Craft of the Mountain Dulcimer and from 3-5pm there will be a reception

Roberta Turkson, originally from Ghana, is the owner of Mukaase restaurant in Nashville, Tennessee. She will introduce students to Ghanaian cuisine today at this week’s T.G.I.F (Think Globally, It’s Friday!) event with a special Ghanaian meal, and she will discuss her life in Ghana as well as her experiences as a business owner in America from noon to 1 pm.

The Center for International Education is proud to announce that four Berea College students won Summer 2012 Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarships. They all traveled to Ghana with Berea College professors Kathy Bullock and Linda Leek this May for a course entitled “Traveling to Ghana: African Music and Literature.”  Waylon Mcdonald, Terence Witherspoon, Karly Jones  and Jessica Gaines are the award winners of $3500 each. Only 500 students in the country are receiving this esteemed award. Congratulations, Berea!

A record 31 Berea College Students apply for Gilman Awards

"The Gilman Scholarship Program offers awards for undergraduate study abroad and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide."
